Led by its team of Partners, GHP Legal Solicitors of Wrexham, Oswestry and Llangollen is a multi-disciplinary practice employing around one hundred people and serving a client base stretching across more than 10 counties in England and Wales.
The success story of GHP Legal began in April 1970 when Gwilym Hughes, Gethin Davies and Clive Jones, all of whom were Partners in the Wrexham & Shotton Practice of Cyril Jones & Co, joined forces to establish Gwilym Hughes & Partners.
Peter Butler, served his Articles with Gwilym Hughes & Partners and became a Partner in the firm in 1980. His partnership was followed in 1984 by that of Stephen Edwards, who also served his Articles with the firm.
In 1991 the partnership expanded further with the acquisition of the long established Llangollen firm, Charles Richards and Sons. Gethin Davies, who lived in the town, headed the Branch. Gwilym Hughes & Partners relocated to new offices in The Malthouse Business Centre,Llangollen in 2008.
A merger in 1996 with Edmund Pickles and Upton of Wrexham saw Pamela Whitley join Gwilym Hughes & Partners as a Partner. Following the merger, the Partnership owned all the buildings in a large triangular area at the junction of Grosvenor Road and Rhosddu Road. The Wrexham site was then redeveloped with the buildings being connected to form one large office complex.
John Lancaster became a Partner of the Firm in 1999, following the retirement of Gwilym Hughes who remained with the Firm as a Consultant until 2002.
In 2000 the Firm merged with Brown & Lloyd of Oswestry, formerly A W Brown & Co which was established in 1980. The Partners, Richard Lloyd and John Hulme, continued to work from the Albany, 37/39 Willow Street, Oswestry, the current GHP Legal premises.
Robert Williams and Alun Williams became Partners in 2001 and the following year Gethin Davies retired as a Partner, though he continued his involvement with the firm as a Consultant.
In 2008 the Management Team of Gwilym Hughes & Partners evaluated the very substantial and far reaching successes of the Firm and, rather than merely consolidate this, commenced strategic planning for the next stage of development. As a part of this they decided to formalise the abbreviation of the Firm's name to which members of the Profession, Clients, the Media and others, had been referring for some years, and rebrand as "GHP Legal" - a fresh and modern approach that aptly reflects the Firm's position as one of the premier law firms in the region.
Following the introduction of OFR, Richard Lloyd was appointed as COLP (Compliance Officer for Legal Practice) and Robert Williams was appointed as COFA (Compliance Officer for Financial Administration).
2012 saw the appointment of Euros Jones, John Marshall and Nathan Wright as Equity Partners, following the retirement of Peter Butler and Pamela Whitley. Peter Butler and Pamela Whitley remain with the Firm as Consultants
In 2013 the Firm’s Llangollen offices moved back into their original home at 'Old Bank Buildings' in Berwyn Street. In April that year Alun Williams retired as a Partner.
