‘Training’ takes on a whole new meaning for leading North Wales and Shropshire law firm

Training has taken on a whole new meaning for one of the region’s leading law firms after several members of staff announced they were in training for a variety of upcoming sporting events.

GHP Legal, which has offices in Wrexham, Oswestry and Llangollen, is better known for being a leading partner for solicitor training, but the firm, which this year celebrates its 55th anniversary, has long supported and encouraged staff to participate in sport and charitable fundraising events.

The firm recently announced its continuing support for Adrenaline Sporting Events, inviting entries from its one hundred or so staff for the Brynkinalt Running Festival and Welshpool 10k, which are both taking place in March. GHP Legal Partner and keen rugby player, Hywel Jones, says he is hopeful of a good response from staff before the entry closure on Valentine’s Day.

Meanwhile, 25 members of staff have so far entered for the Nightingale House Alyn Waters 5k and 10k runs due to take place in April. GHP Legal is one of the event’s sponsors and Euros Jones, a Partner of the firm, says he is hopeful that even more people will sign up.

Solicitor Mari Sherrington, who works in the GHP Legal Family Department, is also in training. Along with her partner, Leigh Calvert, she has signed up for the Liverpool Tunnel 10k run which takes place on 13th April. They are raising funds for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity in memory of Leigh’s father, Paul, and have been training hard since the disappointment of falling 0.2km short of completing ‘Couch to 5k’ in 2021. Later in the year, solicitor Elzbeth Kenny, a member of the Criminal and Mental Health teams at GHP Legal, will be taking part in the Great North Run to raise money for the Hospice of the Good Shepherd which provides free, high-quality care and support for patients, their families and carers across Chester, West Cheshire and Deeside who have been diagnosed with a life limiting illness. The Great North Run, held annually in Newcastle upon Tyne, is the UK’s biggest running event and one of the largest half marathons in the world.

“From partners to clerks, the people at GHP Legal are all great sports”, says Hywel Jones, “especially when it comes to raising money for good causes. The support afforded them by colleagues is never in short supply, and this in turn makes for a great team spirit.”
