Lawyer gains Mental Capacity (Welfare) accreditation to help vulnerable sector of society

A young lawyer who qualified as a solicitor in April 2018 with leading law firm GHP Legal has already gained accredited status from the Law Society in the area of Mental Capacity (Welfare).

Keen to help the most vulnerable sector of society, Shane Maddocks applied for the accreditation to demonstrate his already considerable expertise in the niche area of Mental Health Law.

The Mental Capacity (Welfare) Accreditation scheme, which was developed by the Law Society in conjunction with the Court of Protection, is open to legal practitioners who offer advice on health and welfare matters under the Mental Capacity Act 2005.

Speaking after receiving news of his accreditation Shane Maddocks said:   “The interview and scrutiny that I underwent following my application was tough and the areas of required competences I had to demonstrate were considerable. This is, however, necessary as the purpose of the accreditation scheme is to help clients confidently choose a practitioner with mental capacity expertise and the experience of working closely with vulnerable individuals and their family to understand and protect their best interests. I am looking forward to getting on with my new role as one of the very few Accredited Legal Representatives in our area.”

Congratulating him on his achievement GHP Legal partner Natalie Roberts, said:  “It came as no surprise that Shane was successful in his application as he has consistently been a hard-working and committed individual since joining GHP legal as a paralegal in 2015. We subsequently offered him a training contract and after qualifying as a solicitor he developed a particular interest in Deprivation of Liberty cases within the Court of Protection, a niche area of law in which our firm has gained a highly respected reputation.”
