A Wrexham IT manager who has already clocked up 110 miles in an annual ten-mile walk to raise money for a local college that provides vocational training for young people with disabilities is urging others to take part this year.
Nigel Redfern, IT Manager at leading North Wales and Shropshire law firm GHP Legal, took part in in his first sponsored walk for Derwen College near Oswestry in 2004, after visiting the garden centre there and being impressed by the dedication of college staff to improving the students’ quality of life.
Established in 1927, Derwen College has substantially extended its range of services over the last forty years to meet the current-day needs of students with learning difficulties and other disabilities. The annual sponsored walk is just one way the college raises money to ensure it can continue to support the students in an ever-changing society.
“This year’s walk is on Sunday 20th March,” says Nigel, “and I would urge as many people as possible to join in. Monies raised from last year’s walk are expected to reach nearly £20,000 once gift aid is received. With more people getting themselves sponsored to walk they could possibly exceed that figure this year.
“Anyone who can’t walk but who wants to sponsor me to do so should email their address, postcode and the amount sponsored to nigel.redfern@ghplegal.com. Derwen College does a fantastic job of nurturing, developing and challenging its students to improve their life skills and helping them to get jobs and live independently and I feel proud to be able to support them.”
