Q&A - Is it contravening data protection law if we send marketing texts to customers’ mobiles?

Q: I work for a florist. My boss told me I should start making a list of mobile phone numbers given by customers when they place an order so that we can text them with special offers at certain times of the year such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day etc. I am not comfortable with this as I’m sure it contravenes Data Protection laws and we would need to get the customers’ permission first.
