Q&A What happens to the graves when a church is sold off?

The village Methodist church where my grandparents purchased a double plot and are buried is to be sold at public auction. Sale details state the purchaser will be required to take on the adjacent Burial Ground on a 999-year lease and they must fence it off. They will be responsible for the upkeep of the burial Ground and the Methodist Church ‘will retain a right of access for burial purposes and the visiting of graves’. I regularly visit my grandparents’ grave and hoped when my time came I could be laid to rest there with them. Now I am worried about future access to the plot and ongoing maintenance of the churchyard. Can you provide any clarity?

Q&A What must I do to leave my body to medical science?

I have a rare medical condition which took fifteen years to diagnose. That was eight years ago and even though my life expectancy was affected by it I am still doing ok. I have, however, recently concluded it is time to ‘put my affairs in order’ by making a new Will and setting up a Power of Attorney etc. After talking it over with my family I have decided I would like to leave my body to medical science. So, my question is, should I put that in my Will?

Q&A Could I get compensation if I quit the family farm I’m being squeezed out of?

My older brother and I have worked on the family farm since leaving school. I wanted to go to university but Dad wouldn’t let me. He said we need to work as partners and preserve the farm for future generations. The problem is we have no formal partnership. Dad just controls everything and pays us a basic wage. As my brother is now marrying into a neighbouring farming family I’m worried I will get squeezed out and I will have given up the chance of a different career for nothing. Is there any way I could get some kind of financial settlement from the farm to help me go my own way?

Q&A Following the announcement of new IHT rules around pensions, should I include my pension in my Will?

I have put as much as I have been able to into my pension pot to fund my retirement. Now, just when I am thinking about retiring, it seems that what’s left of that pension pot when I die could be taxed at 40% rather than being passed on to my wife in full. Do I need to update my Will and include my pension in it?

Q&A Gym refused to cancel my membership and has appointed debt collectors. What should I do?

I joined a gym after moving into the area. I had to sign up to a year’s membership, but after 2 visits in 2 weeks decided it wasn’t for me as I was less fit than I’d thought. I asked to cancel the membership but my request was refused. I queried the ‘cooling off’ period but was told it did not apply because I had already used the gym. I was really upset and cancelled my standing order, but now I have received a notice from debt collectors. What should I do?
